From Iran to America: A Journey of Perseverance, Opportunity, and Community Leadership

Immigrant | Former Division I Collegiate Wrestler | Entrepreneur | Hospitality Leader | Community Advocate

Kia Kianersi is an Iranian-born American entrepreneur, former collegiate wrestler, and business leader whose life reflects perseverance, adaptability, determination, and a longstanding commitment to the community that helped shape him.

A New Beginning in America

At just nine years old, Kianersi immigrated from Iran to the United States, beginning a new chapter filled with both challenges and opportunities.

Growing up in Northern Virginia, he entered the Fairfax County Public Schools system, where he adapted to a new country, educational environment, and culture.

His experiences in the public school system became a formative part of his life. Through education, relationships, athletics, and community involvement, Kianersi learned to navigate new challenges, embrace opportunities, and establish roots in his adopted home.

Rather than simply adjusting to his surroundings, he sought to flourish within them, developing friendships, discovering his abilities, and contributing to his community from an early age.

His upbringing helped instill a strong appreciation for opportunity, hard work, personal responsibility, and the importance of giving back.

Discovering Wrestling and Earning a College Scholarship

One of the defining chapters of Kianersi's youth began during his sophomore year at Fairfax High School, when he first took up wrestling.

Unlike many accomplished wrestlers who begin competing in childhood, Kianersi entered the sport relatively late. Through dedication, determination, and disciplined training, he developed into one of the area's recognized high school competitors.

By his senior year in 2000, he had earned third place in the Virginia Group AAA State Wrestling Championships in the 130-pound division.

He was also selected to The Washington Post's Second-Team All-Met wrestling team, recognizing his accomplishments among leading athletes in the Washington metropolitan region.

His rapid development earned him a wrestling scholarship to George Mason University, where he joined the NCAA Division I wrestling program for the 2000–2001 season.

The achievement marked an important milestone: a young immigrant who had entered the American public school system at nine years old had progressed from beginning wrestling in high school to earning an opportunity to compete at the collegiate level.

Wrestling helped reinforce qualities that would remain important throughout his professional life: discipline, resilience, accountability, teamwork, and the willingness to face difficult challenges.

From Athletics to Entrepreneurship

Kianersi carried his competitive mindset into the business world, pursuing opportunities in the restaurant industry, hospitality, marketing, management, and business development.

His professional experience includes involvement with Vocelli Pizza, franchise operations, marketing initiatives, operational strategy, and business development.

Over time, his entrepreneurial interests expanded to include hospitality management, real estate, event development, and the revitalization of existing businesses.

His approach has emphasized hands-on management, building customer relationships, finding practical solutions, and recognizing the potential in businesses and communities.

Revitalizing Historic Orlean Market & Pub

In 2015, Kianersi became involved with Orlean Market in Fauquier County, Virginia.

Located in the historic village of Orlean, the market represented an opportunity to combine entrepreneurship with community preservation.

Rather than viewing the establishment solely as a restaurant or retail business, Kianersi recognized its longstanding role as a gathering place for residents, travelers, families, and local musicians.

Through his involvement, Orlean Market & Pub has continued developing as a country store, restaurant, pub, and community destination.

The establishment has supported local musicians, open mic performances, bluegrass gatherings, community celebrations, and hospitality traditions that contribute to the identity of rural Virginia.

Giving Back to the Community

Community involvement has remained a consistent theme throughout Kianersi's life, beginning with his formative years in Fairfax County and continuing through his entrepreneurial career.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Orlean Market & Pub adapted to support local residents by helping provide access to food and essential supplies. The business also made internet access available to students and families navigating remote education in an area with limited broadband service.

His involvement in local events and the preservation of Orlean's heritage reflects an appreciation for community connections and the importance of maintaining gathering places across generations.

In 2026, his community work included helping organize Celebrate Orlean Day, commemorating 211 years of village history and bringing together residents, musicians, vendors, and local supporters.

The Meaning of Opportunity and Perseverance

Kianersi's journey illustrates how education, athletics, entrepreneurship, and community relationships can influence the course of a life.

From arriving in America at nine years old, to navigating the Fairfax County public school system, earning a Division I wrestling scholarship, and pursuing business ownership, his experiences reflect a willingness to adapt, learn, compete, and grow.

His background as an immigrant has remained an important part of that story, connecting the opportunities he encountered growing up in Northern Virginia with his desire to contribute to the communities where he has lived and worked.

A Continuing Legacy

Today, Kia Kianersi's story continues through his business interests, hospitality ventures, and work within the community.

His journey represents more than individual achievement. It reflects the opportunities made possible through education, hard work, meaningful relationships, and participation in community life.

From his early beginnings in Iran to his accomplishments in athletics and entrepreneurship in the United States, Kianersi's life reflects an enduring commitment to perseverance, opportunity, and giving back.

His story is about more than where he came from or what he has accomplished. It is about what he has built along the way—and the communities he continues to serve.
