Orlean, Virginia: Witness to History

Image
Orlean, Virginia: Witness to History by Jeff Hughes Civil War histories invariably point to Gettysburg , and the famous battle fought there, as the high tide of the Confederacy. The point at which the American South came closest to seizing its independence. Only, those accounts are wrong. By July 1863, notwithstanding the string of battlefield victories that Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia had put together, the prospects of the Confederacy were already quickly waning. The west was nearing collapse. Food and forage – never abundant – were in critically short supply... enough so that that spring had already seen bread riots in Richmond and Lee dispatching half his army (Longstreet’s corps) into North Carolina to find sustenance. And Stonewall Jackson, Lee’s battlefield soul mate, lay fresh in his grave. No one understood those quickly narrowing odds better than Lee. When he began crossing the Potomac in the summer of 1863, with destiny pulling him towards the sleepy, crossroads ...

Exploring and checking out what Virginia has to offer!

Image
We've been exploring and checking out different ways to get to the Orlean Market in the village of Orlean . Today we're going to start our road trip in Front Royal west of Orlean. We've outlined two route of travel: one is fairly fast; the other is  more scenic. Take your pick! For the fast trip, pick up I-66 east outside of Front Royal. Enjoy the scenery as you travel to Exit 18 ( Markham ). If it is summer or spring time and fresh fruits and/or veggies are calling you, go left on Leeds Manor Road (Rt. 688) to Hartland Orchard (follow the sign). Hartland Orchard is owned by the Green family and provides a wonderful variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables either already picked or pick-your own. If you turn right onto Leeds Manor Road, Fall will provide peaches and apples at Stribling Orchard. Pumpkins are also available plus an assortment of baked goods for your pleasure. Lunch is also available during the fruit season. Mt. View, the home of the...

OINK! Exploring Tyler's 4H project!

Image
At The Farm with Tyler       This week I had the amazing opportunity to meet Tyler Riddoch, an Orlean native, and his 4 portly pork friends.  Tyler was introduced to the 4H program through a friend, who had begun his own experience with 4H the previous year.  Intrigued by the program, Tyler enlisted the help of his family, and began raising pigs in his backyard.  Tyler purchased the two pigs in which he intends to sell for his project from Frying Pan Park Farm , saving the other two pigs for his family's own freezer.  His father, Ian, built a charming shed and fenced pasture for the pigs, making sure they had enough room to roll in the mud.  His mother, Ellen, helps Tyler feed and water the pigs and also makes sure the pigs are brushed and cleaned and always looking pretty.      With a full grown male pig weighing almost 700lbs, Tyler goes through about 100lbs of grain based food per week for his 4 pigs, 3 of which are fe...
